American tennis player Nathan Ponwith has accepted a one-month suspension under tennis’ anti-doping rules.
28-year-old Ponwith, who reached a career-high world singles ranking of 367 in June 2023, tested positive for cannabis at a World Tennis Tour event in San Jose, Costa Rica, in February 2026. Cannabis is prohibited in-competition.
The ITIA accepted Ponwith’s explanation that use of the substance occurred out of competition.
Under World Anti-Doping Agency rules, the default suspension for a breach of this type is three months, which can be further reduced to one month if the individual commits to a treatment programme approved by the ITIA.
Ponwith has entered into a treatment programme. As such, the player’s suspension will end on 18 July 2026, subject to completion of the programme.
While suspended, Ponwith is not allowed to play in, coach at, or attend any events organised or sanctioned by World Tennis, WTA, ATP, the Grand Slams, or any national association.
